laser cutters are cool.
I first stumbled across a laser cutter at the architecture and design building in college. I was tired of cutting out my stencils for spray painting by hand, so finding a machine that did it for me, and perfectly, was very exciting. I could foresee the potential for a machine like this right away, so I got a job as a shop attendant in the laser lab.
Years later, now considering myself a professional artist and designer, it was time to purchase a laser cutter of my own. The Glowforge Pro has been a great tool for tapping my business into a niche market. I have only scratched the surface! I anticipate laser cut products and services being a large portion of my business.
Astrological clocks
While traveling Europe, I found myself in the Old Town Square of Prague, Czech Republic. Amidst a sea of food vendors and people on walking tours , stood a clock tower with one of the world’s most unique clocks. Created over 600 years ago, this astrological clock tracks the 12 constellations in their solar and lunar relation across the 24 hour day. Interestingly, this clock predates Galileo, so it was designed from Earth’s perspective.
This huge, historic, and unorthodox clock was unlike any clock I had ever seen, and I felt compelled to create something like it. Layering many painted layers of laser cut material, and some hardware assembly, I was able to create my own astrological clock sculptures. Though I was not able to recreate the master clockworks of the original in Prague, you can still manually set the clock to your own birth time and astrological signs.
