Colliding perspectives, intentional balance, and detail worth the second look.

Pencil and paper is my first love as an artist. I was an avid drawer as a kid, would often fill my notebooks with drawings instead of homework. Just like anything in life, skill comes with lots of hours of practice. As an adult, I’ve found a style of combining many subjects and ideas into a “Where’s Waldo” of detail. I like to converge multiple perspectives, and draw lines that serve multiple uses. Finding a visual balance, creating meaning, and hiding golden nuggets in a sea of chaos is what most excites me when illustrating.

SKETCHING FLORENCE

In the Spring of 2015, I studied abroad in Florence, Italy. This was the single most inspirational and eye-opening experience of my life, both as an artist and a human-being. Living in Michelangelo’s neighborhood for five months, I did my best to channel the energy of the Renaissance and create every day!

One class I took was called “Sketching Florence”, where we were assigned to sketch daily. The semester started in black and white, mostly figure drawing in charcoal. We progressed through different mediums and subjects, concluding with water color painting in the gardens of the Oltrarno. By the end of the class, each student had an entire book of work, documenting one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the world. Each of these drawings is a portal to my favorite moments as an artist, dangling my feet over the river as I paint the Pontevecchio, or setting up my watercolors on a stone wall as I look across the sprawling terra cotta rooftops.
